"Homosexuality is being portrayed in a favourable light in Bollywood movies and by the media. Gays are becoming bolder and taking more risks, and consequently getting caught," explained Kulkarni.

Social pressure

Lomesh Rai, operation head of Globe Private Detectives in Mumbai, confirmed Kulkarni's contention.

"Gays often get married due to social pressure, but continue with their same-sex relationships. We have encountered seven to eight such cases this year alone," said Rai.

Sanjay Sonawane, the managing director of Rovers Detective Agency in Pune, said the number of men involved in gay relationships is higher than women.

The Break Up: Narendra Kulkarni, chairman of a detective agency in Pune, says around 15 per cent of the 100-odd extramarital cases he has probed in the last 20 months were same-sex affairs.

"Lesbians are fewer, and most such couples are usually IT professionals. Some clients suspect that their spouses are gay and they want concrete proof.

In other cases, it is during our investigations that the fact that the partner is gay comes to light," said Sonawane.

Decriminalisation

Deepak Monga, who heads the marketing and corporate communication department of Tops Security, Mumbai, said the increase in the number of such cases may be the result of the Delhi High Court's ruling to decriminalise homosexuality as defined in Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

"It is probable that such cases are coming to light. However, our agency is yet to come across any such case," said Monga.

Gay Endings

Shekhar Sarin approached a detective agency after his newly-wedded wife did not let him consummate the marriage.

The detectives subsequently established that Sarin's wife was indeed having an extramarital affair. Only, it was a woman with whom she was involved.

Sunita from Kolhapur married Prakash from Aurangabad.

However, Prakash spent the wedding night and several following nights watching television to avoid sharing the bed with his wife. Subsequent investigations revealed that he was gay.
