Maharashtra: Defunct wells, borewells must be readied to meet water needs of Dharashiv, says Tanaji Sawant

Maharashtra Health Minister Tanaji Sawant on Monday said that the defunct wells, borewells and ponds should be readied in order to meet the water needs of Dharashiv district in Maharashtra, reported the PTI. 

According to the PTI, Tanaji Sawant, who is the guardian minister of the district, held a meeting of the district planning committee and reviewed the water shortage situation.

"The old and defunct wells, borewells and ponds must be readied so that water from these sources can be put to use. Use of water for irrigation purposes should be stopped and it should be reserved for drinking only," a release quoting the minister stated, as per the PTI.

During the meeting, officials also highlighted the problem of fodder shortage in Paranda, Washi and Bhum areas of the district.

Tanaji Sawant directed the administration to initiate timely steps to ensure that people won't need fodder camps in the district.

He also appealed that cattle should not be sent to slaughterhouses, but can instead be housed in goshalas (cow shelters).

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday conducted a review of hospitals in Pune district of Maharashtra and directed officials to ensure that there is an adequate supply of medicines, reported the PTI.

According to the PTI, Ajit Pawar, who was appointed as the district's guardian minister earlier this month, held a meeting with senior officials and reviewed facilities at government-run hospitals in the region.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar also took a review of the state-run Sassoon General Hospital.

As per a release issued by the district administration, Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar instructed officials to ensure that hospitals provide all facilities to patients and informed of the government's decision to provide additional funds for healthcare.

Senior officials, including divisional commissioner Saurabh Rai, district collector Rajesh Deshmukh, commissioner of Pune police Ritesh Kumar, dean of Sassoon General Hospital, and district health officer Ramchandra Hanakare, among others, were present for the review meeting in Pune, as per the PTI.

The deputy chief minister also reviewed water supply schemes and work on electricity lines, the release said.
