Out, damned spot! When Lady Macbeth cried this in the famous sleepwalking scene, little did Shakespeare know that it would become a commonplace phrase, some day.
The iconic character he created in this woman who was always seen in a conflictual role between embracing her feminity and discarding it, will come alive on stage this weekend through a production by Kathak dancer Vikram Iyengar.
Crossings: Exploring The Facets Of Lady Macbeth weaves together elements of Indian classical music and dance alongside text-based drama to explore the aspects of Lady Macbeth.
With references to figures from Indian mythology such as Putana and Shakti, this piece examines what it means to be feminine or de-feminised through the contradictions within this complex character. The complex personality will be brought to light by performances by four actors and dancers using Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Manipuri as well as passages from their play as their medium of communication.
