Without giving an iota of attention to the criticism of dynasty politics, a billionaire family’s three members are in the fray for Assam Assembly polls. Six-time MLA and former Congress minister Gautam Roy, who switched to the BJP, his son Rahul and daughter-in-law Daisy are contesting from Katigora, Udharbond and Algapur, respectively. Roy joined the BJP in 2019.

According to their affidavits, the total net worth of the Roy family has been estimated at R142.57 crore. Roy’s wife Mandira also became an MLA after winning the Algapur seat from Congress in the 2013 bypolls, while his father Santosh Kumar Roy had represented Katlichera from 1972-78.
264 ‘crorepati’ candidates
A total of 264 ‘crorepati’ candidates are engaged in the fray for 126 seats in Assam. United Peoples Party, Liberal, contestant Manaranjan Brahma is the richest with total assets worth R268 crore. Rahul Roy is the second richest candidate in Assam with assets worth R136 crore.
BJP ad: ECI notice to newspapers
The Election Commission has issued notices to eight newspapers of Assam that carried an ad of the BJP in the form of a headline claiming that the party will win all 47 seats where elections were held in the first phase on Saturday, officials said.
