RSS believes some religions, languages inferior: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the RSS of considering some religions, languages and communities of being inferior to others and said that the fight in India is about this and not about politics. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha was addressing a gathering of several hundred Indian Americans in Herndon, a Virginia suburb of Washington DC, on Monday. “First of all, you have to understand what the fight is about. The fight is not about politics. That is superficial,” Gandhi said as he asked one of the Sikh attendees in the front rows to give his name. “What is your name, brother with the turban,” he asked. “The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India or a kada in India. Or he, as a Sikh, is going to be able to go to Gurdwara. That's what the fight is about. And not just for him, for all religions,” said the Congress leader. Gandhi is currently on a four-day visit to the United States. His first stop was in Dallas which began on Saturday, and he arrived in Washington DC on Monday. Criticising the RSS for their policies and vision of India, he said, "What the RSS is basically saying is that certain states are inferior to other states. Certain languages are inferior to other languages. Certain religions are inferior to other religions. Certain communities are inferior to other communities. This is what the fight is about." "...that is the ideology of the RSS. Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Manipuri. These are all inferior languages. That's what the fight is about," he said, asserting that these issues end up in the polling booth, the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha. "But the fight is about what type of India we are going to have,” he said. He asserted that regardless of the region one belongs from, "all of you have your history, all of you have your tradition, all of you have your language, and every single one of them is as important as any other one.” Gandhi also said that the BJP has no "understanding" of India. “India is called a union of states. And in the Constitution, it's written clearly. India, that is Bharat, is a union of states. It means it's a union of languages, traditions, histories, etc," he said. "They say this is not a union. These are separate things. Among these, only one is very important. And whose headquarters is in Nagpur,” he said, in a veiled reference to the RSS. Addressing the diaspora, Gandhi called them "ambassadors of India". "You're the bridge between these two great unions of states. You make us very proud," he said. "We understand the difficulties and struggles that you have had to deal with. It's not easy. But when you came here, you came with humility, you came with respect, and you came with affection,” he said. He said that in a BJP system, a person cannot have two identities. "You cannot be India and at the same time be America. That is what the fight is about. That is what we are trying to do in India," he said. "We are saying, don't spread hatred, spread love. Don't be arrogant, be humble. Don't disrespect people, respect people, respect traditions, respect religions, respect languages, respect communities,” Gandhi said. US 9/11 attacks: How terror strike took place in America on Sep 11

The September 11, 2024, marks the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a day forever etched in the hearts and minds of people around the world. The communities and leaders on September 11, each year, gather to honor the memory of nearly 3,000 lives lost and to reflect on the resilience and unity that emerged in the aftermath of one of history’s most devastating attacks, the news reports suggest. The 9/11 attacks had profound effects on U.S. and global security policies. They led to the initiation of the War on Terror, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and significant changes in U.S. domestic security measures, including the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the implementation of the USA PATRIOT Act, as per the reports. The attacks on September 11 in the year 2001, were carried out by terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda, the investigations had revealed. The terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two of these planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center (WTC), causing the iconic skyscrapers to collapse. A third plane struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers, preventing it from reaching its intended target, believed to be either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Family members of the victims, first responders, and city officials gather at the 9/11 memorial in the United States of America each year, where they read aloud the names of those who perished. The solemn ceremony include moments of silence and the traditional reading of names, ensuring that the personal stories behind the tragedy remain alive. Across the nation, ceremonies and moments of silence are observed to mark the dark day in the US history. In addition to memorial events, many people engage in acts of service and community outreach as a tribute to the spirit of generosity that arise from the tragedy. The attacks caused massive destruction and led to a global shock. Emergency responders faced unprecedented challenges in rescue and recovery efforts.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: The story behind the tradition of Ganesh Visarjan

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, one of the most celebrated festivals in India, particularly in Maharashtra, is an annual event that marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. The festival, which lasts for ten days, is marked by the installation of beautifully crafted idols of Lord Ganesha in homes and public pandals (temporary structures) and concludes with the grand procession known as Ganesh Visarjan, where these idols are immersed in water bodies. The Origin and Significance of Ganesh Visarjan On the last day of the festival, the tradition of Ganesh Visarjan takes place. The concluding day of the 10-day festival is also popularly known as Anant Chaturdashi. As the word 'visarjan' implies, on this day immersion ('visarjan' means immersion) of Lord Ganesha's idol takes place in a river, sea or water body. On the first day of the festival, the devotees mark the beginning of Ganesh Chaturthi with the placement of Lord Ganesha's idol in their homes, public places and offices. On the last day, the devotees come out in processions carrying the idols of their beloved God and perform immersion. After the ten days of worship during Ganesh Chaturthi, the Visarjan ritual symbolises the return of Lord Ganesha to Mount Kailash to his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The immersion of the idol in water represents the concept of returning to the elements, with the earth-made idol dissolving and becoming one with nature again. According to rituals, people keep Lord Ganesha inside their homes for one-and-a-half days, five days, seven days, or ten days. The festival ends with Anant Chaturdashi. The Tradition of Ganesh Visarjan The tradition of Ganesh Visarjan was popularised during the 19th century by freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak, who used the festival as a means to unite people and promote a sense of nationalism against British rule. Tilak encouraged the installation of large Ganesha idols in public spaces and the organisation of cultural and educational programs around the festival. This not only brought people together but also fostered a sense of community and shared purpose. Over time, the tradition evolved, and today, Ganesh Visarjan has become a grand spectacle, particularly in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and other parts of Maharashtra. The processions are accompanied by music, dance, and chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya," creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. People from all walks of life participate in these processions, carrying the idols to nearby rivers, lakes, or the sea for immersion. Ganesh Visarjan is not just a ritual but a profound expression of faith, community, and the cyclical nature of life. As we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, the story behind this tradition reminds us of the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the festival. It is a time for reflection, renewal, and a reminder of our responsibilities towards nature and each other. As the chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya" echo through the streets, we bid farewell to Lord Ganesha, knowing that he will return again next year.

Mother Teresa's birth anniversary: All you need to know

August 26 marks the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, one of the most revered figures of the 20th century. Known for her boundless compassion and dedication to the poor, sick, and marginalised, Mother Teresa's life and work continue to inspire millions around the world. Here’s everything you need to know about her legacy and the significance of Mother Teresa's birth anniversary. Early Life: The Beginnings of a Saint Mother Teresa was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, which is now the capital of North Macedonia. From a young age, she was deeply religious, influenced by her mother’s strong Catholic faith and commitment to charity. At 18, she left her home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland, where she began her journey as a missionary. It was here that she took the name Sister Mary Teresa. In 1929, she moved to India to begin her novitiate in Darjeeling, and soon after, she started teaching at a convent school in Kolkata. It was in Kolkata that she would eventually hear what she described as her “call within a call,” a divine message that led her to leave the convent and devote herself entirely to the service of the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa's birth anniversary: Founding the Missionaries of Charity In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. Starting with just 12 members, the organization grew rapidly, dedicated to serving the “poorest of the poor.” The Missionaries of Charity focused on providing care for those who were destitute, sick, and dying—people who were often ignored or abandoned by society. Mother Teresa and her sisters established hospices for the dying, orphanages, leper colonies, and schools for underprivileged children. Her work was driven by a deep belief in the dignity of every human being, regardless of their circumstances. By the time of her death, the Missionaries of Charity had expanded to over 130 countries, with thousands of members continuing her mission. Achievements and Global Recognition Mother Teresa’s tireless work earned her international acclaim and numerous awards. Among the most notable was the Nobel Peace Prize, which she received in 1979 for her humanitarian efforts. During her acceptance speech, she emphasised the importance of love and compassion, saying, “It is not enough to be a good person. We must be people of action. Love cannot remain by itself—it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service.” In 1980, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, recognising her significant contributions to society. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States and numerous other accolades from countries and organizations around the world. Sainthood and Canonisation Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, leaving behind a legacy of service and love that touched millions. Her death was met with an outpouring of grief, and she was given a state funeral in India, an honor rarely accorded to private individuals. In 2003, just six years after her death, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa, a significant step toward sainthood. On September 4, 2016, Pope Francis canonised her as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, recognising her as a model of holiness and charity. Her feast day is celebrated on September 5, the anniversary of her death. The Continuing Impact of Her Work The Missionaries of Charity continue to operate globally, carrying forward Mother Teresa’s mission of serving the most vulnerable. They run homes for the dying, orphanages, and schools, providing care and support to those in need. Mother Teresa’s work also inspired countless other charitable organisations and individuals to follow in her footsteps. Her legacy is not just in the institutions she founded but in the lives she touched and the values she embodied. She showed the world that even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact, and that love and compassion can transcend boundaries of religion, nationality, and social status. Mother Teresa’s birth anniversary is a day to celebrate the life of a woman who dedicated herself to the service of humanity. Her unwavering commitment to the poor and her belief in the power of love have left an indelible mark on the world. As we honor her memory, we are reminded of the enduring relevance of her message: that even in the smallest of acts, we can make a difference, and through love and service, we can bring hope to those who need it most.

Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Origin and significance of Dahi Handi tradition

Krishna Janmashtami 2024, celebrated with fervour across India, marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.  Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada as per the lunisolar Hindu calendar, which typically falls in August or September according to the Gregorian calendar. Krishna Janmashtami 2024 will be celebrated on Monday, August 26. Dahi Handi will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 27. Among the many customs associated with Janmashtami, the Dahi Handi tradition stands out as one of the most colourful and energetic celebrations. Krishna Janmashtami 2024: The origin of Dahi Handi The Dahi Handi tradition finds its roots in the playful and mischievous nature of young Krishna. According to Hindu mythology, Krishna was fond of butter (makhan) and would often steal it from the homes of villagers in his hometown, Gokul. His love for butter was so intense that he, along with his friends, formed human pyramids to reach earthen pots (handis) of butter and curd (dahi) hung high from the ceiling. Over time, this playful act of butter-stealing transformed into the Dahi Handi festival celebrated with great enthusiasm in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and other parts of India. Significance of Dahi Handi The Dahi Handi celebration holds deep symbolic meaning. The breaking of the handi represents the victory of good over evil and the triumph of Krishna's divine playfulness over the rigidities of societal norms. The festival also emphasises the values of teamwork, unity, and courage, as groups of young men, known as Govindas, form human pyramids to break the pot. Teamwork and Unity: The Dahi Handi tradition showcases the importance of cooperation and collective effort. The Govindas, who are often from local communities, work together to achieve a common goal, symbolising the strength that lies in unity. Courage and Perseverance: Breaking the handi is not an easy task. The pyramids can be quite tall, and the task requires immense physical strength, balance, and determination. This reflects the courage and perseverance that Krishna himself exhibited in overcoming challenges. Spiritual Significance: On a deeper level, the Dahi Handi ritual is a metaphor for spiritual elevation. The handi represents the ego, which is hard to break, and the Govindas' effort to reach it symbolises the soul's journey towards self-realisation. The curd within the pot signifies the sweetness of divine bliss that one experiences upon breaking the ego and realising the self. Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Modern Celebrations In contemporary times, Dahi Handi has evolved into a competitive event with a festive atmosphere. Many regions host Dahi Handi competitions, where teams of Govindas compete to form the highest pyramid and claim victory. The event is often accompanied by music, dance, and chants of "Govinda Ala Re," creating a lively and joyous environment. The celebrations have also gained a social dimension, with the prize money offered by organisers often being used for community welfare projects. Despite the commercialisation of the event, the essence of the tradition remains intact, continuing to inspire the values of teamwork, courage, and devotion. Krishna Janmashtami and the Dahi Handi tradition are more than just religious observances; they are a celebration of life, joy, and spiritual wisdom. As we prepare to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami 2024, the Dahi Handi festival serves as a reminder of the playful yet profound teachings of Lord Krishna, urging us to embrace unity, courage, and the pursuit of higher consciousness in our daily lives.

Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Do’s and don'ts to keep in mind while fasting

Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, is one of the most happy festivals observed by Hindus around the world. This festival commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Krishna Janmashtami 2024 will be celebrated on August 26. Devotees celebrate the holy birth of Krishna, who is thought to have been born to defend the world from evil and restore dharma. The Significance of Krishna Janmashtami Krishna Janmashtami is observed with great zeal and reverence. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura at midnight on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight, Bhadrapada. His life and teachings, as portrayed in the Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures, continue to inspire millions. Krishna is revered not only as a supernatural entity, but also for his intelligence, fun personality, and close relationship with his devotees. Celebrations Across India Krishna Janmashtami celebrations vary by area in India, but most feature singing devotional songs, dancing, fasting, and reading texts. The temples are magnificently decorated, and special prayers (pujas) are held to commemorate the event. In Maharashtra, the festival is known for "Dahi Handi," a popular ritual in which groups of young men construct human pyramids to break a pot of curd dangling in the air, symbolising Krishna's passion for butter. The festivities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where Krishna is thought to have spent his childhood, are especially magnificent. Devotees recreate scenes from Krishna's life, particularly his boyhood pranks and Ras Leela dance with the Gopis. The Importance of Fasting on Janmashtami Fasting is an essential aspect of the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. Devotees fast throughout the day and night until Krishna's birth, which is supposed to occur at midnight. The fast is a technique to purify the mind and body while also demonstrating dedication and discipline in reverence of Lord Krishna. Ahead of Krishna Janmashtami 2024, here are some dos and don'ts of fasting you should be mindful of. Dos and Don'ts of Fasting on Krishna Janmashtami Dos: 1. Choose the Right Type of Fast: There are various types of fasting, such as Nirjala (without water), Phalahar (fruit-based diet), and Ekadashi-style fasting (avoiding grains and cereals). Choose the type that aligns with your health and capability. 2. Stay Hydrated: If you’re not observing a Nirjala fast, ensure you drink plenty of water, coconut water, or fresh fruit juices to stay hydrated throughout the day. 3. Eat Light and Nutritious Foods: If you’re following a Phalahar fast, consume fruits, nuts, milk, and light meals made from ingredients like sabudana (tapioca) and singhara (water chestnut flour). These foods are light yet provide energy. 4. Break the Fast Properly: Once the fast is over at midnight, break it with light, easy-to-digest food to avoid any discomfort. 5. Engage in Prayer and Meditation: Spend the day in devotion by chanting Krishna’s name, reading scriptures, and meditating to keep your mind focused on the divine. Don'ts: 1. Avoid Heavy and Spicy Foods: Refrain from eating heavy, spicy, or fried foods when breaking the fast, as they can upset your stomach after a long day of fasting. 2. Don’t Overexert Yourself: While fasting, avoid physical activities that require too much energy. Keep your tasks light and focus more on spiritual activities. 3. Avoid Negative Thoughts and Actions: The purpose of fasting is not just physical abstinence but also mental and emotional discipline. Avoid anger, gossip, and other negative behaviours. 4. Do Not Fast if You’re Unwell: If you are ill, pregnant, or have any health conditions that make fasting difficult, it’s better to abstain from fasting and instead engage in other forms of devotion.

The immediate aftermath saw a chaotic scene as emergency services rushed to aid the wounded and secure the area. Shortly after the Gateway of India attack, another car bomb detonated in Zaveri Bazaar. The explosion occurred in a densely packed area filled with shoppers and vendors. The blast caused extensive damage to shops, vehicles, and infrastructure in the market. Police, firefighters, and medical teams responded swiftly to both sites. Rescue operations were conducted to assist victims and clear debris. Medical personnel worked to provide treatment to the injured, with several hospitals in Mumbai operating at full capacity. The city was put on high alert as security forces worked to investigate the attacks and prevent further incidents. Investigations revealed that the bombings were orchestrated by terrorist groups aiming to create fear and disrupt life in Mumbai and to create severe impact on the economy by targeting two of the most crowded and iconic places in the city. The economic implications were equally substantial. Zaveri Bazaar, a gold and jewellery trading hub, experienced a significant drop in sales as vendors and customers dreaded returning to the region. The Gateway of India, a popular tourist destination, has seen a decrease in visits. The explosions not only harmed local businesses, but also the city's tourism industry.
