Another day, another hike

Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Not too long after a sharp increase in petrol prices, Compressed Natural Gas rates were hiked by Rs. 2 per kg, supposedly on account of a fall in rupee value against the US dollar.

Naturally, this became a topic of discussion. One could almost hear the dread in her voice as a certain Shabana tweeted: 'Now, for the hike of Rs 2, Delhi auto guys will charge Rs 20 extra.'

Swapnil Mishra saw the lighter side of things: 'Yay! CNG is now above the poverty line.' And RK had a question: 'I get the point. We Indians are fussy about prices, but why should Rs 2 become a trending topic?'

The debate continues
An open letter from Right to Food campaigners to Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission, made a number of people happy.

Aruna Roy reportedly asked Ahluwalia to live on Rs 32 a day, while demanding withdrawal of an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court.

Someone using the handle Soul in Exile tweeted: 'No big deal Montek has access to the Parliament canteen!' A certain Prince added: 'Don't forget, this Rs 32 logic is from people whose every expense is borne by tax payers of the country. Should we be shocked?'

What not to say

The topic 'things men shouldn't text each other' prompted some amusing examples that included: 'Why are you taking so long to text back?', 'We need to talk', 'I had a dream about you last night', 'Send me a picture so I can put it in my phone for when you call', 'My parents aren't home, want to come over?' and 'We should get matching tattoos.'

The last word

What journalist Barkha Dutt noticed last night: 'Anna Hazare is now a blogger, joins Facebook and Twitter. And here the UPA's top leaders are stuck in time, unable and unwilling to communicate.'
