Until a few days ago, I wasn't aware of how much the lawmakers of our country were paid to 'run' the world's largest democracy. All I knew was that they earn more than what I get after putting endless hours at work and that too for an entire month.
However, soon after all the recent drama that happened in the Parliament, the figures became clear, very clear. I was astounded to know that the netas, most of whom are illiterate, accused in several corruption and criminal cases, earn about Rs 38 lakh per annum (as salary, allowances and other reimbursements). The earning doesn't end here. It's a known fact that the amount of money they make through dishonest means runs in incredible numbers.

However, the agony is that the cola philosophy of 'dil maange more' still applies to them. Especially when the nation is reeling under the pressure of unprecedented and spiralling food prices. Also, at the time when about 2,000 drought-affected farmers have requested the President to grant them permission to end their lives.
It's a matter of absolute shame for our crooked netas to ask for more money when the government has denied the military veterans their legitimate pension for over two decades. In fact, by asking for a hike at this juncture, our so-called diligent leaders have hit a hard slap on the face of the aam junta who live in their constituencies, and yet sleep empty stomach.
It's not that I'm of the opinion that their salary shouldn't have been increased. But the time they chose to ask for a hike was unwarranted and unexpected. Also, not all MPs deserve a salary hike, as they are many who have not have asked even a single question in the Parliament, or have spent a penny on their constituency.
The salary should have been revised only after keeping in mind their collective performance since the time they have been elected. But then, how do you do that? And if this yardstick would have been applied, I believe no MP would have been eligible for any salary at all!
The hike, at this juncture, is an inexcusable lavishness at the expense of the sincere taxpayers.
