The recent raid at a pub in Mulund is nothing but an extension of Mangalore goondaism, which does not want pub culture to mushroom in India.

But why do the police not raid theu00a0 bars and restaurants at street corners? I can guarantee that the police will catch many more offenders there than what they booked in Mulund. It's no big deal. This is a clear case of the government's move to eradicate pub culture.

In fact, the police used an archaic law (which is seldom implemented), which requires that every drinker carries a liquor permit if he or she wants to drink. Around 80 per cent of the people are not aware of this law.

Technically speaking, one needs a permit to even carry liquor from the wine shop to his house. If the police raid bars across the country they would require half of India's land to jail the arrested patrons.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. However, the government should at least spread awareness of this rule via television and newspapers. Thus, the common man will be aware of this rule.u00a0

Moreover, how many policemen possess liquor permits? Some, I have noticed, even drink on duty.
