Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Pakistan's new 34-year-old female foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar won a significant number of fans in India, if the flurry of tweets is to be believed.

Not everyone appeared to grasp what her role was though, choosing to focus on her expensive Birkin bag instead.

Gul Panag, for instance, also known as 'the thinking actress' presumably because her peers struggle to hold coherent thoughts for prolonged periods had this to say: 'I like the way Rabbani looks: movie star sunglasses, head covered, Birkin in tow. Maybe she's brilliant too.' Maybe it wasn't one of her thinking days.

A certain Khizra added: 'So, while the men in India are apparently ogling Khar, the women are ogling her Birkin.' Rajiv Sharma had an interesting question though: 'What if the bag is made in China?'

Back with a bang
There were two rumours that brought former item girl Rakhi Sawant back into the limelight. The first involved her running up a massive bill on clothing for her new television show.

The second was an alleged statement she made, that she would wed the day yoga guru Baba Ramdev agreed to marry her.

This prompted Aashish Aryan to tweet: 'Hina Rabbani Khar is Pakistan's attempt to divert attention from the topic.

We should send over Rakhi as our foreign minister!' And this, from a certain Laugh Riot: 'I love Rakhi. She's like watching three National Geographic shows at once: on animals, natural disasters and engineering marvels.'

Rewind

The topic 'I miss when...' yielded responses ranging from 'our society wasn't as judgmental as it is now' to 'a kiss actually meant something' and 'half of you weren't on Twitter and actually thought it was a dumb, pointless social network.'

The last word
Journalist Barkha Dutt asks, 'If Hina Rabbani were a male foreign minister of Pakistan, would she ever be deconstructed in terms of look and dress?'
