THE news of the arrest and criminal-like treatment of railway commuters at Borivli is very disturbing. The report made my blood boil. These people were charged for rioting with deadly weapons (handbags, tiffins and cellphones). Their photographs and fingerprints were taken as if they were petty criminals.

TV footage showed that people trying to leave the station were dragged to the police vans. What could be more ironical than this?
Middle-class women, raising their voice against the torture they are being subjected to every day, are beaten and arrested and kept in the lock up while goons of political parties creating havoc go scot-free. This is shameful and the police as well as the railway authorities should apologise to these people.

Our aggressive policemen and policewomen become lame ducks when it comes to dealing with real criminals. They watch the tamasha when goons of the political parties go on a rampage and cause damage worth lakhs and crores of rupees to public property or disrupt city life. These 'bravehearts' run for safety when rioters pour out on streets with sticks and swords in their hands.
But when people from the underprivileged class or the common people protest, their lathis move with extra zeal. Do they even have an iota of sense to understand what policing is for and what the police should do in such situations?
