It's been two weeks since Barack Obama was distracted by a Brazilian's behind at the G8 summit. And a week since Chinmoy Byapari was suspended from a senior secondary school where he teaches Mathematics. So what's the connection?

Well, Byapari had his Obama moment at a far flung corner of West Bengal. Unlike the US President though, he had to pay dearly for fixing his gaze on objects other than the blackboard. There was no photographer around, but a complaint went to the school's headmaster that Byapari was making female students uncomfortable by his stare.

Barack and Byapari got me thinking. Is there a correct way to stare at women?

One of the Sen sisters once said she's okay with men staring, provided their stare doesn't make her feel naked! Her mom Moonmoon Sen had gone a step further. In the early 80s when she was a mini starlet in Bollywood and bit of an embarrassment for the Bengali film industry she had said men rape her with their eyes. Hmmm.

The definitive word came from a friend who's an authority on women. "Don't start checking her out from the start. Look into her eyes. Look hard and look deep. Make her feel you can see her soul or whatever. She is bound to lower her eyes. The moment she does that, lower yours too." That should help.u00a0
