The city’s COVIDpositive patients breached the 500 mark, for the third time in September. While the testing rate may have risen, the numbers should alert us to the fact that we are seeing some hills and valleys when it comes to the number of positive patients.

We must stay alert to the fact that the pandemic is still present and can take a vicious turn at any time. Numbers tell the story.
Vaccines, mask mandate and avoiding gatherings, distance and hygiene should still be very much on the charts.
We have to look carefully at what the numbers are saying. They have the potential to surprise us, telling us that not alarm bells but caution lights must be still on.
Let us go by numbers now. Set the bar lower and lower, when it comes to figures. Let us work towards not seeing a 500 or 500 plus figure again.
Then work backwards to a 400. Once we see some consistency on that count, let us try our level best, all of us have to play some part, in leaving the 400 or 400-plus mark behind and aiming for 300.
With that, should come some relief but let us not get complacent and try to scale it back even further through COVID-appropriate behaviour.
Let us not find excuses like festivals, more people going out, re-openings or whatever.
Make it tough and non-negotiable, really doing all that we possibly can till we reach the 200 cases mark. Post that, we need to get rolling to the 100s. Every lower should be a milestone to be celebrated but not a stop.
Every person must play their role in our journey to three, two and one day, dare we say it, single digit.
The numbers need to propel us to that.
