Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has hit the headlines once again, this time for his bodyguard Gurmeet Singh, also known as Shera, who has been booked for assault after an altercation with a man late on Tuesday night.

The incident took place after Shera got into a scuffle with the victim on Link Road. The victim has been hospitalised. It is not the aim of this editorial to take sides about what happened. Shera has been under public scrutiny for years now. Since he is a superstar’s bodyguard, the spotlight on Salman is naturally diffused onto him as well.

Shera has been in the news on and off; his relationship with Sallu has made news, his roots are public knowledge and he has the unenviable task of keeping Khan’s frenzied fans in check and ensuring good security
detail.

Having been in the spotlight for a while now, Shera needs to be careful of his image. He is a public figure himself, to some extent, and that entails conducting himself with decorum or handling things with more tact when disputes arise or an argument threatens to snowball into something bigger.

There may be some justification in saying that Sallu has not conducted himself in the best possible manner on numerous occasions, so you cannot expect Shera to do so. That aside, Shera would do well to be a common sense foil to his more volatile boss, who still needs his father to put out fires for him and even shamefully apologise for him.

We also see that a superstar’s coterie is, at times, even more affected and put on airs even more than the superstar. They bask in the access to that the star gives them. But that should not be misused.

A superstar’s aide must remember that he is not entitled or above mere mortals in any way.
