mid-day editorial: We can't stay blind to the dangers of smog

Bandra has been taken over by Delhi-like smog, with residents choking and coughing their way through the toxic fumes from fires lit at night by miscreants.

A report in this paper stated that for the past couple of months, residents have found themselves enveloped in smoke because of nightly fires lit to extract metal from trash. The burning garbage has compounded the poor air quality since the past few days. With temperatures dipping in the city, there is thick smog hanging over the locality for long periods of time.

We need the police and civic authorities to become alert to this menace, which is a big health hazard for residents. Mumbai does not have the best air quality to begin with, and those with respiratory problems struggle during this period every year, as the lower temperatures lead to further complications. This kind of practice will only make it harder for those suffering from such health problems.

Residents have to be encouraged to file complaints. They must first organise themselves, form a group and take pictures of this activity that can be used as evidence. Right now, people fear that there is an organised syndicate that will extract revenge if they complain against the trash fires.

Citizens must come together. Find the correct avenue through which to complain anonymously. Use social media wisely and with credibility to draw awareness about this problem and its ramifications. Go about it in a meticulous and
effective way.

The local representatives and ward officers too need to be in touch with the people on the ground about this nuisance. Only then can we all breathe easy.
