An environmentalist has raised the red flag about certain trees in the central suburbs. He claimed that tree roots are being covered with concrete while some development is on
The roots of the trees have been hacked away and trees are left standing in shallow basins without adequate soil for the roots to grip or even obtain nourishment
It is tree alert, going by a recent report. The National Green Tribunal in 2015 had directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to ensure that concrete surrounding tree trunks is removed. Instead of following the order, we witness flouting of the same.

An environmentalist has raised the red flag about certain trees in the central suburbs. He claimed that tree roots are being covered with concrete while some development is on.
He has highlighted his concerns to the relevant authorities through a letter, citing destructive concretising of tree root zones by contractors constructing drain channels. He is worried that trees on a stretch will fall in the monsoon, if corrective action is not taken. We must see a quick investigation to ascertain the merit of these claims. If valid then, instead of red tape leading to passing the buck, remedial action should be undertaken.
This paper has highlighted so many initiatives like Mission Green Mumbai, where citizens are encouraged and many become part of a greening programme in the city. They are educated and made aware about how they can contribute towards greening, and every step, however small, counts.
We have reports on beach clean-up drives and other actions. During Christmas, this paper featured a Bandra initiative where a giant Santa cap was installed atop a tree, to spread the message that nature is the real Santa and we must do all to preserve it.
Then, at the same time, we have reports about concretisation and development adversely affecting the little green we have in the city. While this ping-pong battle rages on, we have authorities either wilfully or due to bureaucratic wrangles refusing to take action against legitimate complaints about greens being denuded. This makes a mockery of all green initiatives in the city. Let us have one credo: plant more greens, but saving the already existing ones is equally important.
