In a people friendly initiative, the Mumbai Police launched the Sunday street programme over the past weekend. This essentially meant keeping stretches of certain roads closed to traffic for a few hours. Within these few hours in the morning people could come out to run, cycle, skate on these stretches. Alternatively, they could simply walk and enjoy a few hours of no traffic on the roads and relative peace. This is one way of improving the quality of life for Mumbaikars and part of the plan to become more citizen oriented.

The objectives are laudable and the small window can certainly be a mood lifter for Mumbaikars who can enjoy their streets to the hilt.

Whatever happens in the future, let us try to extend the Sunday streets ethos in small ways on other days too. Now that Covid-19 cases are down, looking at the current scenario, consider public transport so that there are less vehicles on the streets.

Car pooling is also an option, for the same reasons—less cars on the road, fuel savings and in that way, one shifts to green commuting and combats climate change. Less road rage, which translates to more peaceful streets. More discipline while driving which comes from obeying all traffic rules. Pedestrians must cross safely, avoid jaywalking, keep a look out for dangers and do the very best to maintain order.

A big shoutout to cleanliness, which is just another facet for care and respect on our streets. No spitting—red paan stains are absolutely ugly and unhygienic on walls and pavements. Dog owners do pick up the poop and clean up after your canine. Litter goes into the bin.

Sunday Streets is a special drive for citizens. Let us make every street a little special every day in our own way.
