Technology should complement human ability

The BMC is testing a remote-operated lifeguard that is meant to rescue swimmers in distress as far as 2-km into the sea. A trial run was conducted at Juhu beach recently, in fact trials were conducted during both high and low tides.

Discussions were to be held with other experts and the fire brigade too, about the efficacy of the equipment, after which a decision will be made  on the usefulness of this equipment. A company representative called it a water drone and said it served as secondary equipment in rescues. In drownings, which usually happen around 50 to 100 metres into the sea, a lifeguard needs to get inside the water to reach the person in distress.

All this takes a few minutes. But this machine can cover a distance of 60 metres in 30 seconds, a representative said. The machine can carry one person back to shore at one time, but it can keep two-three people afloat until lifeguards reach them, the representatives added.

There are a number of other positives but we are looking at the larger picture and stating if technology can help in water rescues we must be aided by it. This is especially important in light of the number of drownings on our beaches, at lakes and seas, too, especially during this season. We must say though that not every place will have this particular technology. Yet, any and everything that can aid in rescue must be used, if found feasible and affordable.

Lifeguards must get assistance themselves to effect a rescue. There are other water rescues, too. We live in a hi-tech age and can use our knowledge to make rescues faster and more effective. Let us just ensure the technology of any equipment is spot on and moreover, all equipment is maintained to make these buys and trials worth it.
