Italian minister, who lived at home until he was 30, proposes new law

Speaking from experience? Italian minister Renato Brunetta

Public Administration Minister Renato Brunetta proposed the legislation after it emerged that Giancarlo Casgrande (60) had been ordered to pay his 32-year-old graduate daughter a monthly allowance.

Brunetta made the suggestion during a radio interview in which he also admitted that his mum made his bed until he was 30.

He said, "I don't see what's wrong with passing a law that says all over 18s should leave home and not be a drain on their parents resources. I must admit that I stayed at home until I was 30 and my mother made my bed up until I left and I am ashamed of that.

"Obviously it goes to say that for such a law to work we need good employment or higher education prospects and the availability of cheap housing to rent."

But Brunetta, who is with the ruling People of Freedom coalition, was ridiculed by the opposition. Massimo Donadi, of Party of Values, said, "Yet again, another senseless proposal from the government. To fly the coop, Italian youngsters need good employment prospects and not futile gestures such as this. Why doesn't the government come up with something more concrete for the younger generation?"
