Says British PM David Cameron, while paying tribute to athletes and citizens who made Olympics roaring success

'Britain delivers'

As the Olympics drew to a close on Sunday, British Prime Minister expressed pride over the successful conduct of the Games, where the hosts delivered the best performance in 104 years by winning 65 medals, including 29 gold, to take third slot in the medal tally.

Cameron addressed the media along with Sebastian Coe, chief of London Olympics Organising Committee, and said to ensure Britain’s continued success, the government would provide funding of 125 million every year to UK Sport until theRio Olympics in 2016.

He said, “We showed the world what we’re made of, we reminded ourselves what we can do.” Cameron gave a rousing speech after two weeks of unprecedented sporting achievement for Team GB and international recognition that Britain delivered a hugely successful Olympic Games.

“Today at the end of these, the third London Olympics, with third place for Team GB in the medals table, I think you only need two words to sum up these games: Britain delivered. We showed the world what we’re made of, we reminded ourselves what we can do, and yes we’ve demonstrated that you should never ever count Team GB down and out. The idea that the greatest member of Team GB was the British public may have been an advertising slogan, but it turned out to be spectacularly true.”

“Over the past weeks we have looked in the mirror and we like what we have seen as a country. It’s a Britain where a boy born in Somalia, Mo Farah, can come here, seize opportunities and run his way into the nation’s heart. It’s a Britain where we cheer ourselves hoarse not just for Team GB, but for Team Jamaica, or – as people have just done on the Mall – Team Uganda.” u00a0
