According to the state-controlled Manica Post, the furious woman, identified only as Rachel, threatened to detonate the canisters if ex-partner Blessing Dube went ahead with his church ceremony, reports the Scotsman.
The waiting congregation was terrified into silence.
Later an embarrassed church official had to call off the ceremony between Dube and his new love, identified as Judith Chimukombe, which was being held in the town of Rusape in eastern Manicaland province.
"Dube was ... set to officially have the hand of the apple of his eye in marriage when Rachel popped up and vowed to have nothing of it," the paper stated.
The woman has two young children by Dube, who is employed by the Apostolic Faith Mission church.
She said she felt "exploited" and broke into the venue accompanied by a party of angry relatives.
