The incident involved a pair of fighter jets being sent to monitor a flight from Denver to Detroit, after two passengers on board were reported to be "allegedly behaving suspiciously", ABC News reported.
According to law enforcement sources, the plane was taken to a remote area for a security screening, but no explosives were found, instead the "suspicious behaviour" was two people "making out" mid-flight, in the bathroom.
No arrests have been made over the incident, which came as the nation observed the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in which four passenger planes were hijacked and nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives.
