The convoy of troops was carrying munitions from Damous to Beni Mlika in the province of Tipaza when it was ambushed by a group of Salafist rebels with bombs and automatic weapons, according to the El Watan newspaper.
In the ensuing fighting, the rebels set off several bombs and opened fire at the convoy.
Algerian authorities have not confirmed the reports.
