A medical miracle has taken place in Chicago, Illinois as a grandmother has given birth to her own grandson.
The joy of becoming a grandmother and the joy of becoming a mother are two distinct and separate joys in a woman's life until now.
Kristine Casey is the oldest woman in Chicago to give birth
At age of 61, Kristine Casey has become the oldest woman to give birth in Chicago history while being the surrogate to her daughter's child (Kristine's own grandchild).
The mother to the baby is 35-year-old Sara Connell, who has unsuccessfully tried for years to conceive until she and her mom came up with the idea for Kristine to carry the child.
Doctors put Casey through a series of medical and emotional tests to determine if she was healthy enough for the pregnancy.
Using the most up-to-date fertility drugs and in-vitro fertilization doctors used Sara's egg and her husband's
sperm to create an embryo that was then transferred to Casey's womb.
There were no major medical complications for the new grandmother; she delivered a baby boy via caesarean section at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Record holder
Adriana Iliescu, a retired Romanian university lecturer, gave birth to a child at the age of 67 making her the oldest woman to give birth.
