A second high school massacre due to be carried out on Adolf Hitler's birthday has been foiled after bomb-making equipment and knives were found in a teenager's bedroom, German police said.

A 17-year-old was arrested at his school in Ennepetal over an alleged murder plot to coincide with the birth anniversary of Adolf Hitler and the Columbine High School killings in the USA on April 20.

His arrest came just over 24 hours after 15 people died in a high school shooting spree near Stuttgart in the south of Germany.

Police across the country are braced for a series of copycat threats after 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer murdered former schoolmates, teachers and passers-by in the village of Winnenden.

Online hoaxes

One school in Ilsfeld, near Winnenden, was sealed off and searched after a threat to carry out a similar massacre there was posted on an Internet chat room.

A 21-year-old man was also arrested in the town of Soltau after making similar claims in another Internet forum.
The wave of online hoaxes follows claims that Kretschmer had also given warning of his intentions on an Internet chat room. Police now believe the posting they were shown was fake.

'Planning massacre'

Officers in Ennepetal arrested the teenager after parents of children at Reichenbach Gymnasium, a school of between 800 and 900 pupils, reported that the boy had told their children he was planning a massacre.

Teachers reported he had used school computers to download instructions for making a bomb. When police raided the flat where he lived in the village of Schwelm, they found glycerine, hydrochloric acid and a black powder.

They also recovered a computer memory stick containing bomb making instructions, at least 15 knives and two samurai swords.

The boy told police the threats had been a joke, but a police spokesperson said they may have averted a major tragedy.
