Brit Muslim docked over assaulting ex-wife over wearing Western clothes

A devout Muslim has been jailed for 18 years for holding his ex-wife in the toilet for an hour and physically assaulted her as punishment for wearing Western clothes.u00a0Snaresbrook Crown Court Judge Judge Simon Wilkinson said the victim Zahanara Begum had been through a ''terrifying ordeal'' at the hands of her former husband Khalique Miah.

Zahanara was in the loo when Miah intruded and covered her mouth to stop her screaming, punched her in the chest and stomach and climbed on top of her,The Daily Mail reports.u00a0He also taunted her over her plucked eyebrows, shaved legs and highlighted hair, and told her to stop wearing Western clothes and slammed her knickers as ''Satan''.u00a0Miah refused to loosen grip on Begum though the disturbance had woken up their three-year old daughter.

He pocketed his ex-wife's mobile phone, cut her landline and refused to let her leave the flat until 10am the next day, when she persuaded him she wanted to give the marriage another go.u00a0Miah has admitted to causing assault causing actual bodily harm.

Miah, who works at Tesco in Bow, East London, has no previous convictions and had been on the supermarket's fast-track management programme.u00a0He has been married to Begum for eight years and has two children, now aged three and seven.
