The latest additions to the Oxford English Dictionary have been announced, with 1,200 new words and 1,000 revised entries making the cut. We break some of them down for you

Yogalates
Fitness routine combining pilates exercises with techniques of yoga
Origin: 1990s

Squee
Slang expressing delight or excitement
Origin: Online discussion about Ewoks (fictional race of bipeds in the Star Wars universe) in 1998

Merica
Short for America; emphasises qualities that are stereotypically American
Origin: Mid-19th century, with people mocking ‘rednecks’
