Work on the proposed one-km high tower has been stopped for a year and several labourers working on the project have been laid off. The work on the foundations of Nakheel Harbour and Tower will commence in 12 months and isu00a0 likely to take about three years, said a company spokesman.

The tower, earlier known as Al-Burj, will be the centrepiece of a 270-hectare marina development called Nakheel Harbour and Tower near the Ibn Battuta Mall and the Arabian Canal.

With 200 floors and 150 lifts, it is expected to take 10 years to complete.

The tower joins other major projects in Dubai that have been hit by the economic downturn, including the Trump Internatio-nal Hotel and Tower, Gateway Towers and parts of the Waterfr-ont project (a series of man- made islands).
