Justice Kamaljit Singh Garewal of India has been elected to the UN Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) for a seven-year-term beginning July 1 next, getting highest number of 154 of the 172 votes cast in the 192-member General Assembly.

Sophia Adinyira (Ghana) and Mark P Painter (United States) were also elected but were distant second, getting 124 votes each. Other successful candidates were from Argentina, France, Canada and Uruguay.

There were 13 candidates for the seven posts and those from Romania, Ireland, Australia, Lithuania and Britain failed to make the grade. Australia had fielded two candidates, both of whom were defeated.

In the last four years, India has never lost an election in the United Nations. In fact, in every election its margin of victory has been substantial and it has been amongst the highest vote getters.

In 2007, the Assembly had established a two-tier formal system of administration of justice comprising United Nations Dispute Tribunal and United Nations Appeals tribunal to deal with internal grievances and disciplinary cases related to the staff and other employees of the organisation. These were the first elections held under the new internal justice system.
