Iraqi police Maj Muthana Khalid says the bomb exploded Thursday morning in the market west of Hillah.
Khalid says those killed and injured were at the market buying and selling cattle. Dr Hussam al-Janabi, a medical official in Hillah, confirmed the casualty toll.
Violence has declined dramatically in Iraq during the past 18 months, though there are growing concerns about a possible upward trend in violence after a series of attacks in recent weeks.
