London: An American woman was killed, and five others were injured in a mass knife attack by a 19-year-old youth in London, which the police said could be linked to terrorism. The attack comes just days after the police chief warned that a terror attack in the UK was a case of "when, not if" and Scotland Yard announced that 600 additional armed officers will be deployed around London as part of anti-terrorism plans.

The mass stabbing by the youth — identified as a Norwegian Somali — who has been arrested, took place at Russell Square near the British Museum at 10.39 pm, Scotland Yard said. Six people were injured in the attack, but a woman believed to be in her 60s succumbed to her injuries later, the police said.

The attacker was arrested after being tasered by police officers. The police said early indications suggested "mental health was a factor in this attack." However, in the wake of a string of recent attacks in Europe, the authorities said that "terrorism remains one line of inquiry being explored". Additional police units have been deployed to the area after the attack. No details have been released yet about the condition of the five injured.
London mayor Sadiq Khan said, "I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant...We all have a vital role to play as eyes and ears for our security services and in helping to ensure London is protected."
