Fashion icon Alexander McQueen was mourning the loss of his beloved mother and being jilted by an Australian lover when he took his life.
The British designer, whose death shocked his fans and industry supporters, was found hanging in his London home on Thursday, just days before he was expected to present his latest collection.
It was McQueen's personal demons that were examined yesterday, with an unpublished interview in Harper's Bazaar magazine revealing details of his tortured romantic life.
McQueen told fashion journalist Godfrey Deeny his last relationship was with a mystery lover, whose name he had tattooed on his arm.
"(He was) a bastard who went back to Australia and I was left looking at his name," McQueen had said, pointing to the ink on his right arm.
He was unofficially married to his ex-partner George Forsyth in 2000, but the relationship ended a year later.
