Pak court lifts ban on JuD to collect animal hides in Pakistan

Lahore: A Pakistani court today lifted a ban imposed by the Punjab government on an affiliate body of Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed-led Jamaat-ud-Dawa to collect the hides of sacrificial animals during Eid-ul Azha.

Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), a JuD front, had challenged the ban in Lahore High Court on September 16, following which the court issued a notice to the provincial government.

Lahore High Court Justice Mahmood Maqbool Bajwa allowed the petition of FIF after the Punjab government failed to present a notification banning the organisation from collecting the hides of sacrificial animals during the three days of Eid-ul Azha.

A law officer presented a list of the organisations banned to collect the hides of the sacrificial hides. The name of FIF was not included in the list.

The judge asked if the FIF name is not in the list how it is banned to collect the hides. The official could not offer a satisfactory reply.

The judge admitted the FIF plea and allowed it to collect the hides during Eid days.

The FIF through A K Dogar, the counsel of JuD chief Hafiz Saeed, challenged the ban ahead of Eid-ul Azha on September 25.

Dogar told the court that FIF is not a proscribed body but a registered non-government organisation (NGO). Media reports estimate that around 10 million animals were sacrificed on Eid last year and their hides were worth Rs 35,000 million.

JuD uses FIF to raise money to fund its activities. Other groups involved in this business to generate funds include Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-E-Mohammad, Tehrik-e-Islam.

Saeed, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba, is an accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people. The US has placed a bounty of USD 10 million on him.
