More than 16 months after he was removed unceremoniously by former president Pervez Musharraf for not endorsing the November 2007 emergency rule, 60-year-old Chaudhry formally "assumed charge of the office" after midnight last night following the retirement of Abdul Hamid Dogar, said a release issued by the Supreme Court.
Chaudhry is expected to start attending court from tomorrow.
The PPP-led government last week buckled under pressure generated by a countrywide protest of lawyers and opposition parties and restored Chaudhry and other judges who were sacked by Musharraf.
