Srinagar/New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Afghanistan on Monday and tremors were felt in India in Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Rajasthan, authorities said.

The earthquake, at a depth of 210 km, had its epicentre in Hindukush region and occurred at 3.35 p.m. (India time), an India Meteorological Department official told IANS.

"That was a hell of a tremor. Hope everyone is safe & well," tweeted former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, minutes after the tremors.

In Srinagar, people fled their homes and offices in panic. Some of them began to pray as the tremors shook buildings.

Worried people called up their relatives and asked for their well being.

However, the US Geological Survey measured the intensity of the quake at 5.7. It said that the epicentre of the temblor was 34 km west southwest of Ashkasham in Afghanistan.
