The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials have arrested three terror suspects - a father and son in Colorado and a man in New York, according to reports on Sunday.

The men are suspects in an ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to carry out bomb attacks in the US, CNN reported.

Authorities have no details of the alleged plot or its timing, according to US media reports.

"Each of the defendants has been charged by criminal complaint with knowingly and willfully making false statements to the FBI in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism," the Justice Department said in a statement.

Officials from the Justice Department said further investigation would follow. The men have been warned that they could face up to eight years in prison.

The three, all of whom are of Afghan origin and living in the US, were arrested in raids Saturday night. The father and son - who have been named as Mohammed Zazi, 53, and Najibullah Zazi, 24 - were taken into custody in Denver.

An acquaintance of the two, Ahmad Wais Afzali, was later arrested in the New York borough of Queens.

The investigation into the alleged terrorist plot is known to have included several raids on homes in Queens early last week. Security forces preparing for the arrival of leaders from around the world for the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
