Ronald Stolberg is alleged to have suffocated his 54-year-old wife Rachel after she woke him up several times during the night.
Prosecutors said that Stolberg held his wife facedown on the ground with such force that she suffocated.
"He pushed her so hard her teeth bit into her lips," the Daily Mail quoted Steve Scheller, Lake County State's Attorney, as saying.
The 47-year-old convict had gone back to sleep while his wife''s body lay on the floor next to the bed.
Prosecutors said that he got up in the morning and noticed that his wife''s hands were blue, but continued with his daily routine and went to work.
According to Scheller, after Stolberg returned from work he called his mother and waited for her to arrive and then told her his wife was dead.
An autopsy has revealed that the victim died from asphyxiation.
Court records showed that Stolberg has a long criminal history, including charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault resisting a peace officer and obstructing justice.
He was held on 3-million-dollars bond after being charged with murder.
