Missiles fired from a US drone hit a car in Pakistan's restive North Waziristan tribal district on Tuesday morning, killing at least three suspected militants, an official said.

The attack took place in Spalga village, located 15 km west of Miranshah, the main town of the district that borders Afghanistan.

"Three people died as two missiles struck their vehicle," an intelligence official said on condition of anonymity.

The identities of those killed in the air raid was not immediately clear, the official added.

Several US missile strikes have targeted Taliban hideouts in North Waziristan in recent months, but Monday's attack was the first since US President Barack Obama announced a troop surge for Afghanistan last week.

US officials are pressuring Islamabad to expand military operations against Islamist rebels on its soil, to supplement US efforts to tackle the insurgency in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's north-western tribal region is described as a global terrorism hub, from where Al Qaeda and Taliban militants launch cross-border assaults on the Western troops in Afghanistan.

Obama said last week that the US had "made it clear that we cannot tolerate a safe haven for terrorists whose location is known and whose intentions are clear".
