Woman who has been married 11 times hope for a love that lasts

Twelfth time Lucky, is it?

Monette Dias

For most of us, walking down the aisle is something we only plan to do once in life. And while that doesn’t always work out, once you’ve been through a divorce, many would be put off for life. However for Monette Dias that simply wasn’t the case. Monette has been married a multitude of times—11 to be exact. She says that from a young age she became fascinated with the idea of marriage after watching fairy stories on TV.

“I was only three but already I knew I wanted a hero of my own,” she says. She comes from a very religious upbringing and was taught that sex before marriage was forbidden. As the years passed, she dreamt about having the perfect fairytale wedding. When Monette was 15 years old her father tragically passed away, leaving a hole in her life that she was desperate to fill. Her first marriage sprang from a need to fill this gap. She was just seventeen when her boyfriend, Steve proposed marriage. Monette eagerly accepted, thrilled at the prospect of becoming his wife. Two months after turning 18, they decided to elope, with Monette donning the same ball gown worn to her prom.

After three children together, Monette and Steve parted ways a decade later, realising they had married too young without truly knowing themselves or each other. Over the years, other unions followed suit. She even underwent couples therapy for her 11th wedding, but nothing seemed to last. “Now I am single again, but I’m not looking for Prince Charming—he’s going to have to find me. I’m not sure if I’ll ever walk down the aisle again. But I’ve learnt from my 11 marriages, and if I marry again, I swear it will be for keeps,” she says.

Implant-inator

The woman who implanted her way to 52 cyber upgrades

For most of us, having one metal chip implanted under our skin would be more than enough—but imagine getting 52. California magician Anastasia Synn has done just that, and in the process got her name in the new book of Guinness World Records. Functions of her 52 implants include opening locks, finding metal objects, calling phone numbers, and performing magic tricks, while one in her hand even vibrates. Synn is a magician, stunt performer and ‘biohacker’—someone who makes alterations to the body with technology.

Toilet paper cleanser

Move over, aroma diffusers. Toilet paper is the new odour cleanser in town. The roll can apparently soak up those weird fridge odours. TikTok influencers are swearing by a hack that involves putting toilet paper in the fridge. One TikToker revealed that the stench might not be coming from mysterious spills or spoiled food, but rather the fridge tray. The bath tissue absorbs the moisture in the air that contributes to mould and mildew.

Virgin birth

A shark in a Chicago zoo has made history—giving birth despite having no contact with any males. The female epaulette shark lives in a habitat of her own at the Brookfield Zoo, located outside Chicago, where she’s lived since 2019. She hasn’t been housed with a male since her arrival, according to a press release from the zoo. On August 23, one of the mom’s eggs hatched into a pup—only the second recorded case of an epaulette shark pup produced by asexual reproduction so far. A virgin birth, indeed.

Potty of Gold

Four men were charged with theft of an 18-carat gold toilet from Blenheim Palace, England. The toilet, valued at 4.8 million pounds (R49.5 crore), was an artwork titled America, and intended as a pointed satire. The commode was a fully functioning tourist attraction.

The proposal(s)

A British woman, Fran Sawyer, opens up about being celibate at 55 despitebeing proposed to 400 times. She says that while younger men on dating sites see her as a cougar, older men get seedy and don’t know how to talk to a woman on social media.

Man moves into mall and makes a home

Security guards at a shopping mall in Shanghai, China discovered a young man who had reportedly been living comfortably under a staircase for over six months. A secondary school student, he was preparing for China’s notoriously difficult university entrance exams and needed a quiet place.
