At least 14 people have died and 6 others are in the hospital after allegedly drinking spurious liquor in Majitha, Amritsar. The incident has impacted five villages, prompting emergency medical assistance and door-to-door health checks. Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney stated that the government is taking all possible measures to prevent further deaths. Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh confirmed the arrest of the main accused, including supplier Parabjeet Singh and the alleged kingpin, Sahab Singh. Police have registered two FIRs under stringent laws and are conducting raids to trace the source of the illegal liquor. Authorities are on high alert to prevent further casualties and dismantle the network behind the sale of toxic alcohol.

On May 7, Amritsar conducted a citywide blackout drill as part of a civil defence preparedness exercise. According to ASI Jagtar Singh, the half-hour blackout from 10:30 PM to 11 PM was carried out to simulate wartime conditions, ensuring no lights were visible to prevent enemy detection. The drill was in line with directives aiming at enhancing urban readiness during a high-threat scenario.
