Despite his imprisonment, Atalay was elected to parliament last year to represent Workers' Party of Turkey, known as TIP. Parliament stripped him of his seat, but on August 1 the Constitutional Court declared his exclusion null and void.

Ebrahim Raisi died on May 20, a day after the helicopter he and his companions were travelling in crashed near Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometres northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran. Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian also died with Ebrashim Raisi in the helicopter crash. India has declared one-day national mourning on May 21 as a mark of respect for Ebrahim Raisi.
