Nottingham: England fast bowler Stuart Broad wreaked havoc on the Australian top order taking eight wickets to join the coveted 300-wicket club as he orchestrated the visitors' collapse to 60 all out on the first day of the fourth Test at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

The 29-year-old seamer's Test-best return of eight for 15 in 9.3 overs has helped him become the fifth England bowler to achieve this milestone.

Mitchell Johnson top scored for Australia with 13 and captain Michael Clarke made 10 as the rest of the batsmen failed to cross the double digit mark in an innings that was wrapped up in just 18.3 overs -- the quickest any team has ever been bowled out in the first innings of a Test -- during a scarcely believable 94 minutes' play in Nottingham.

Chris Rogers, David Warner and Shaun Marsh trudged back to the pavilion after failing to open their respective accounts.

Mark Wood and Steven Finn provided substantial support as they claimed one wicket each.

Broad also joins the list of stalwarts, which features Fred Trueman, Bob Willis, Sir Ian Botham and his team-mate James Anderson in England's 300 club.

Australia's total -- with extras the top score on 14 -- was the lowest by either side in an Ashes innings since England were dismissed for 52 at The Oval in 1948.

England are leading 2-1 in the Ashes and will seal the five-match series if they win at Nottingham.
