Wellington: New Zealand's retiring captain Brendon McCullum has described Kane Williamson, who was named as skipper for the national team for the World T20 next year, as 'a champion fella' and tipped the star batsman to be one of the greatest in the game.

McCullum, who announced that he will call curtains on his international career from all forms of international cricket in February, labelled Williamson as a genius and described the new number one Test batsman as a consummate professional, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The swashbuckling batsman will play a world-record 100th successive Test from his debut against Australia in Wellington from February 12 and will retire after the second and final match of that series, in Christchurch from February 20.
