Gay took full advantage of an over-the-limit wind of 2.6 metres to blow away a field which included former world record holder Asafa Powell in a time of 9.79 seconds.

The 26-year-old American trailed the Jamaican coming out of the blocks but had closed the deficit by the halfway point then stepped up a gear and powered to a comfortable victory.

Powell, who a year ago inflicted Bolt's only defeat of the season at the DN Galan meeting, looked as though he might repeat that success.

However, Gay again reigned supreme and showed no signs of the groin injury which saw him receive treatment at a Munich clinic after beating Powell with his world-leading time of 9.77 three weeks ago in Rome.

"We knew that the wind was very strong (+2.6 m/s). But this race proved that I am in form and was important in terms of the world championship," said Gay.
