Despite being dominated by Rising Pune Supergiant throughout the final and carrying the baggage of having lost to the same opposition thrice in succession, Mumbai Indians managed to break the jinx and win IPL title No. 3 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday night.
Mumbai battled against all the odds in the nail-biting encounter to win their first Maharashtra derby in the 10th edition of the T20 tournament.
And the stars of the show for Mumbai were Mitchell Johnson and Jasprit Bumrah. Death-over specialist Bumrah rose to the occasion and dismissed dangerman MS Dhoni when Pune needed 32 runs from 23 balls with eight wickets in hand to turn things around. When Jonhson came on to bowl the final over, Pune needed 11 runs, But the Aussie pacer took two wickets to ensure that Mumbai won by one-run in what was effectively the closest final in IPL history.
Pune needed just seven runs off the last 4 deliveries when the camera zoomed in on a lady, surrounded by Mumbai Indian supporters, lost in prayer.
Of course, once Mumbai won, 'Prayer Aunty, as she came to be called, went viral and Twitterati made her 'man of the match'.
