Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has been ruled out of today's Champions League clash against Schalke because of injury, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

The Spain forward scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Schalke last month but will be unavailable for the return clash at Stamford Bridge due to a leg problem.

“Fernando we know has a muscular (leg) injury,” Mourinho said. “We don’t know the dimension. Out for tomorrow and the weekend.

After that it’s the international break and we will see how he recovers.” Left-back Ryan Bertrand has also been ruled out with an unspecified injury.

Tonight’s key clashes

> Samuel Eto’o vs Benedikt Howedes
Eto’o, a Champions League winner with Barcelona and Inter, is slowly finding form after a less than prolific start and scored his first Chelsea goal against Cardiff. Schalke skipper Howedes will be assigned the task of shackling Eto’o, poised to lead the line in the absence of Fernando Torres.

> Ashley Cole vs Max Meyer
Left-back Ashley Cole missed the Gelsenkirchen win and will have been impressed with the lively Meyer. The 18-year-old is quick and will keep Cole on his toes by coming in off the wing.

> John Terry vs Adam Szalai
Terry has been revitalised by the return of Mourinho and has re-established himself as a key figure in European competition. The former England captain’s lack of pace can be exposed, but Hungary forward Szalai is the kind of combative, physical player Terry relishes taking on. (Text: PA Sport)u00a0
