Chittagong: Veteran Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara has created a new cricket record by becoming the fastest batsman to reach 11,000 runs in terms of innings played after scoring a maiden triple hundred with a flurry of boundaries on the second day of the second Test against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The tourists, who won the first Test by an innings and 248 runs in Dhaka last week, took their overnight score of 314-5 to 587 post-lunch on the second day at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium.

The left-armed batsman, who was caught out at 319, earlier made his ninth double-century, adding to his 34 three-figure knocks.

Australian legend Don Bradman leads the list with 12 scores of 200 or more.

Sangakkara, who became the ninth batsman to score 11,000 Test runs, was the last man out after his marathon 482-ball 319-run knock that included 32 boundaries and eight sixes as Sri Lanka amassed 587 before being all out on day two at Chittagong.

Batting on 286 with number 11 batsman Nuwan Pradeep, the veteran, who's playing his 122nd Test, hit left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan for a four and two sixes off successive deliveries to first go past his previous best score of 287 and then reach his maiden triple hundred in spectacular fashion.

Sangakkara, 36, was fastest to the 11000 Test-run club, having bettered West Indies batting great Brian Lara's record by five innings.
