Torres will now discuss personal terms with the Premier League champions, who are reported to have offered a British record fee of around 50 million pounds for the former Atletico Madrid star.

"Liverpool Football Club tonight confirmed they have agreed a fee with Chelsea for the sale of Fernando Torres," the statement read. "The player has now been given permission to speak to the London club."

Chelsea last week had a 35 million pounds offer for Torres rejected, a move which prompted the 26-year-old to submit a written transfer request on Friday, which was also turned down. But Blues owner Roman Abramovich appears determined to make a landmark signing to revitalise Chelsea after two seasons of only modest investment in the Stamford Bridge squad.

Suarez joins Kops
Liverpool signed Uruguay striker Luis Suarez from Ajax for a fee rising to 22.6 million pounds last night.

Suarez agreed a five-and-half-year contract with the Reds after passing a medical just hours before the January transfer window closed.

The 24-year-old will wear the iconic Liverpool number seven shirt made famous by the likes of current Reds boss Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan and Peter Beardsley.

"Luis Suarez has today completed his transfer from Ajax to Liverpool FC and signed a five and a half-year-deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2016," a statement on Liverpool's website confirmed. Suarez starred for Uruguay as they reached the World Cup semi-finals last year.

Andy Carroll deal
But Liverpool are on the verge of signing Newcastle striker Andy Carroll as a 35 million pounds replacement for Torres, which clears the way for Chelsea to get their man. The Reds have had a bid for Carroll accepted after two previous offers were rejected. But Carroll forced Newcastle's hand by delivering a transfer request which the Magpies reluctantly accepted.
