Cristiano Ronaldo put the Red Devils ahead from the spot midway through the opening period, but Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard turned the match on its head before the break.

Fabio Aurelio curled home a superb free-kick after Nemanja Vidic capped a dismal display with his second red card of the season against the Merseysiders, before Andrea Dossena lobbed home another in stoppage time.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has now set his team the target of winning all their remaining nine games if they want to wrestle the Premier League title away from United, whose lead at the top of the points table was now cut to four points, although they retain a game in hand.

Confidence

"We have beaten Real Madrid and Manchester United in the same week. If we can beat them, we can beat anybody. Realistically, we have to win all of our games. We have more belief and more confidence now. It will be difficult but we can do it," said Benitez.

After a memorable unbeaten run stretching back to early November, United now go away next week to Fulham. And Ferguson assures no complacency. "We have lost a game. We need to respond and that is what we will do. It is a hard one to take because I felt we were the better team," he said
