Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero admits his side's hopes of retaining the Premier League title are looking a "bit grim" after their shock defeat against Southampton

City produced one of their worst performances of the season in a 3-1 loss at St Mary’s on Saturday, prompting manager Roberto Mancini to virtually concede the title to leaders Manchester United.

Two awful mistakes from England internationals Joe Hart and Gareth Barry gifted Mauricio Pochettino his first win since succeeding Nigel Adkins at Southampton.

Mancini’s second placed side will be 12 points behind United if Alex Ferguson’s men were to beat Everton at Old Trafford yesterday and Aguero acknowledged the situation looks bleak.

“Some days, nothing works the way it should,” Aguero wrote on his Twitter account yesterday.

“This was one of those days. There’s no excuse — we need to work hard to forge ahead.

“It all looks a bit grim right now, but I won’t believe giving up is an option,” he added.

Having already been dumped out of the Champions League in the group stages, pressure is now mounting on Mancini.

‘Only 10% chance’
Mancini admitted afterwards they will have no chance of catching Alex Ferguson’s side if they can beat Everton at Old Trafford.

“Maybe it’s over. I think we now have a 10 per cent (chance of winning the title). I don’t think United will drop 12 points,” he said.

“(The performance against Southampton) was worse than poor. We didn’t play. We only played with two players in this game and 11 against two is difficult to win.

“It’s very strange because we played very well for the whole of January so I don’t know why we did so badly today. Two of the goals we conceded were incredible for a top team,” he added.u00a0
