Opener Brendon McCullum smashed an unbeaten 171 to lead New Zealand to safety on the fifth and final day of the second Test against India on Tuesday.

McCullum unleashed 15 fours and three sixes in his 260-ball knock as the tourists reached 339-4 at lunch for an overall lead of 217 runs with just two sessions remaining in the match at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium.

Rookie batsman Kane Williamson continued to impress, making 66 not out with nine fours, three of which he struck in an over by paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth (1-100).

Williamson scored a century on his debut in the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad last week.

The pair have added 118 runs for the fifth wicket so far to lift the visitors from 221-4 in their second innings. India made 472 in their first essay in reply to New Zealand's 350.

McCullum, 124 overnight, continued to dominate India's bowling attack, which failed to get any breakthrough on a wicket that showed no signs of deteriorating.

Zaheer Khan returned to bowl with the new ball but left again after completing three overs.

The left-arm paceman had troubled the Kiwi openers during the 4.3 overs that he bowled on day four before straining his abdominal muscle.

McCullum negotiated both pace and spin with ease and brought up the 150-run mark with a steer to the gully for three runs off left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (2-100).

The third and final Test will be played in Nagpur from November 20-24 followed by five one-day internationals from November 28.
